Update

December 2nd, 2009

Sorry for not posting for a while but things have been busy between fishing running 2 boats and moving back to KW for another Winter. The season ended up kinda lousy. We caught a good amount of fish on all trips including a few all out hammer jobs but the weather was just as sour as it comes. We lost four straight weekends at one point (Fri, Sat, and Sun.) Those little tuna fish never left and we managed to catch three more small bluefins on two charters as well as doubling up on a pair of 250 lb dressed keeper fish on Sept. 24 on a day we were commercial tuna fishing. To all those who lost trips to weather I appologize I couldn’t get everyone rebooked this season but once I got backed up on 5 or 6 trips it was hard to find openings. Next Spring is filling up fast. I booked two more dates today and already had 7 in the books. If you want a trip next Spring don’t hesitate get a call in and get the day/days you want. I will be starting in April. Haddock fishing last April was outstanding and I didn’t get out much so if you want to get out early I would love to take the trip. Anyways I’m about to fly back to NH to jump on a boat and drive it back to KW for the company I work for down here. I am not very excited about it to say the least seing as it’s December. Everyone have a great Holiday season and I hope to hear from everyone soon! Until then I’ll be snapper fishing and snorkling here in the Florida Keys! :p

Tuna

September 16th, 2009

Funny story we had a tuna trip with a group who came up from Philidelphia. They wanted to try their hand a some football tuna fishing. Coming from Philidelphia they were driving right by some world class tuna fishing in the canyons on boats out of NY and NJ. I didn’t argue with them…I have been seing tons of tunas on Jefferies but I haven’t give it an honest effort to catch them (spending all my time tuna fishing trying to catch a much bigger one than a football.) Anyways I was excited to put in a full day trying to hook up one of the small fish on some lighter gear. We started trolling about 9 am…We were hooked up by 10 and had a 65 lb tuna on board 20 mins later. Geeze that seemed easy…We put the lures back out and watched them for the rest of the day. Pleanty of fish splashing on the surface and marking on the fish machine but none as dumb as the one we hooked. Oh well we got our limit anyways! We caught a few pollack, haddock and hake in the afternoon and came in with our chests out and our heads high. I don’t know how long they’ll hang around on the ledge but I feel like we may have the trolling thing figured out so I’d love another chance to go for them. Pleanty of weekdays open!!! Come fishing it’s been great!

Slam Job

September 13th, 2009

Pollack, Haddock, Cod and Hake. Full coolers all around fish every stop and tons of football tuna and whales on the surface. Finally some nice weather too. 25 lb cod took the pool. Can’t beat fishing like this and it should only get better as the temps cool. Get down here and go fishing with us! Still pleantly of time to book for the Fall run and give a bid at filling your freezer. It’s going to be a long Winter!

Where did summer go?

September 12th, 2009

Wow went from being too hot for our one week of Summer to this…60 with rain and screaching Northeast for a week straight. They blew the forcast today so we turned back due to a very uncomfortable slow ride. When we get out the fishing is good. Even when the bite is slow we still scrape up a good amount of fish. On the days they decide to chew it gets down right ugly. Had a few days with individual people pushing 30 keeper haddock and pollack. Last time out we had a slow bite but we picked all day and managed to fill the cooler before we left for home. Tuna fishing has slowed from our hot stretch of 4 days in August. We have hooked up a few times and seen loads of fish but the bite has certainly been off. Maybe this wind will stur them for next week. Anyways… we have weekends filling up quickly and only a few Sundays left in October. There are some Fridays left but they are going quick too. The mid week stuff is busy some weeks and dead others so give us a call and we would love to fit you into any opening we have.

WE WILL BE ATTEMPTING TO RUN UP UNTIL THANKSGIVING FOR POLLACK AND HADDOCK. ALL DAY AND MARATHON TRIPS ONLY AFTER THE 15TH OF OCTOBER!!! THE POLLACK ARE LOOKING LIKE THEY WILL SHOW UP IN FORCE AND THOUGH WE CAN’T PROMISE ANYTHING IT IS OFTEN EASY TO CATCH POLLACK UNTIL YOU CAN’T REEL ANYMORE DURING THE LATE FALL. CALL FOR AVAILABILITY!

Boats

August 22nd, 2009

Suck as my uncle Rock would say. First off I need to thank everyone who called about my dog Romeo. Thanks for your support in this tough time we all loved that little guy to death down here. No one moreso than my father and myself and he will be greatly missed by anyone who has ever had the chance to spend a day at sea with him. As far as the boats sucking thing the Northwind has been out of commision for a few days with a minor problem that we can’t seem to find the source of. We have now changed and done all but one thing on the motor that has to do with the cooling system so we should have it back up and running at some point on Monday. We managed to go two for two on tuna trips before striking out twice in a row. Typical tunas you just have to get lucky I guess. Our first one was a peanut dressing only 222. The one we caught a couple days later was a bit more respectable dressing at 479 and 104 inches whole. There is a funny story about the landing of the second fish. Uncle Rock had it posted for a while on the AG’s website so I’m not going to repost but if you missed it I’m not shy just ask me you’ll get a chuckle. The bottom fishing is good some days and slow others. Pollock cod and haddock with very few dogs just some days are more active than others. Best trip since my last post was about 15 fish pp. Worst was….well lets just say it was a lot slower than that. The small tuna were everywhere out on the ledge for about a week along with hundreds of whales making for a real good show while we were fishing. Whales and tuna sightings have slowed a bit over the past 2 trips but we did still see at least 5 humpback whales on each one. Inshore stuff is no different than offshore. Catch the tide right and you can load up on macks and put some serious stripers in the boat. Catch it wrong and you look at each other for 4 hours. Out going tide has been most consistant but we have had some decent stiper bites on the incoming…it varies day to day just like everthing else on the water. Anyways we could use some more trips in Sept. Oct. and we will be sailing in Nov. if the weather holds for some big pollock fishing. Weekends are filling fast so call asap. If I don’t answer the phone it is because I am on the water just leave me a message about a date or whatever questions you have and I will get back to you when I get back to the office.

Hot and Cold

August 9th, 2009

The fishing over the past few weeks has been a lot like the weather this Summer. Unpredictable… We were very hot through June and July with Cod, Haddock, and Stripers. Lately some days have been great others not so hot. We have managed to catch fish on every trip we have taken the numbers have just been very sparatic. The offshore fishing for cod and haddock has been much more consistant than the inshore circut. The only thing that has slowed us down has been dogfish. We had a few tough trips where we scraped together decent catches of nice fish but dealt with 20 dogs per angler to catch 10 fish per person. Last few times on jefferies have produced a much better ratio of fish to dogs however so things are looking up there. The Bass made a great show last week and the week before. The past couple days have seen much fewer fish (5-8/trip this weekend.) with an average of about 2 keepers a trip. In comparison the last week in July saw several trips with 10+ keepers and 25-35 total fish caught.
We took our first bluefin trip of the year friday and shockingly to me and everyone else on the planet we are 1 for 1. We caught a fish that dressed out at 222 lbs and was 77 inches long. Going after them again tommorow so we’ll see if I can keep our batting average up. Get your trips for Fall fishing booked NOW!!! Weekends are filling fast and the pollock have already started showing. We will be fishing as long as the weather holds so get your date for the best time of year to be on Jefferies planned with us here on the Northwind!

Summer fishing

July 24th, 2009

We were out quite a bit last weekend bottom fishing. We had a good day on Friday boating a bunch of large cod up to about 40 lbs. We moved offshore later in the day and managed a hndful of haddock and cusk. Russle still hasn’t sent me the pictures!!! As soon as he does I will post them. Sat. we had a marathon and had a great showing of big haddock out on Jefferies. We managed a good mix of pollock and cusk with a handful of cod but the haddock showed up in force and everyone went home with a big bag of fresh fillets. Sunday was much of the same as we managed good numbers of haddock not as many as Saturday but we were only on an all day trip Sunday. We did catch a few big pollock and the pool fish came up at the end of the day Mark Ciders hauled up a 51 lb cod just before we hauled the lines in to head home. He hasn’t sent me the picture yet either!! This week we were working with a production company from Canada making a tv show about a lobsterman who sunk last year out at the Isles of Shoals. Took three days but we finally finshed. The people with the company were great and I stepped foot on the islands for the first time ever. Back to fishing tommorow 3 half day trips! Sunday afternoon is still open for anyone who wants top try to catch some stripers or flounder. (we can also try to catch a sea bass or a black fish as a few of them have come up in the Hampton area of late. The state record tog was landed off the Hampton State pier just last week!) Next week I have half day trips available Monday and Thursday. I have no trip sheduled for Friday the 31st so if anyone wants to get out this coming week get in touch we have room. Still a bunch of stuff open in August including a few Sundays. Come on down the fishing should only get better!

Offshore again at last!

July 10th, 2009

I had the boys from the Boston Fire department out again today fishing for cod, haddock and pollock. We had a sucessful day making a stop this morning for some large cod and boating about 15 of them before the party boats could get out and see where we were fishing. Biggest was pushing 30 but all were larger than 15. We then headed off to Jefferies and poked away all day at haddock, big pollock and market cod. The dogs were a total nuisance all day but we fished threw them and came home with full bags of fillets. Out again tommorow with an all day I will ahve a report when I get in.
